Fulani herdsmenSenator Obinna Ogba representing Ebonyi central senatorial district, on Wednesday, May 11, said that the federal government should find a lasting solution to the Fulani herdsmen and farmers clash. While speaking with newsmen in Abuja, he said that whatever decisionthe government takes that would ensure peace could not be opposed as its a very serious matter that requires urgent attention. He said this while reacting to the stand of the herdsmen who rejected the plan of the federal government toestablish cattle ranches but insisted on having grazing reserves and routes.Ogba said nobody could oppose the government in its bid to establish cattle ranches across the country and as means of curbing herdsmen, farmers clashes. “It is not whether they want it but what is important is what does the federal government want to do to give assure the safety of the Nigerianpeople.“The federal government should put its feet down and find a lasting solution to the problem whether it favours the herdsmen or anybody at all.“What is important is what will you doto guarantee the safety of the populace,”he said. The Senator however maintained the grazing reserves or routes was just another way of sustaining the violence, attacks and reprisal attacks.Senator Ogba also took his stance on a bill in relations to grazing in the House of representatives saying that he would not support such a bill if it came to the Senate.“I have not seen the bill and I do not think any senator will mention such things on the floor of the Senate,” hesaid.During a public hearing at the Senateon Tuesday, May 10, the Association of Cattle Rearers (Miyetti Allah) refused the federal government’s proposal to establish cattle ranches. They insisted on having grazing routes and reserves. However, representatives from other geo-political region backed government establishment of the ranches. However, the Igbo group (Ohanaeze ndi’Igbo) insisted that the herdsmen should be the ones to establish the ranches not the government.Attacks by Fulani cattle herders havebeen increasing in frequency and severity recently and the Nigerian government has been accused of responding too slowly.
